Best Scenic Roads in America: North Shore Scenic Drive | Road Trip | Country Magazine

BOB FIRTH

The Devil Track River attracts trout fishermen, hikers and ice climbers.

Lake Superior’s North Shore is a diverse landscape full of rugged rock, rivers, inland lakes and spectacular waterfalls. Many people think everything north of the Great Lakes is in Canada, but Minnesota has a nearly 145-mile-long “trail” running along Lake Superior from Duluth to Grand Portage, just a few miles shy of the border.

Even though it’s really Highway 61, I call North Shore Scenic Drive a trail because it makes me feel as if I’ve gone back in time to the 1600s, when French explorers canoed and hiked here. Much of the land is still wild and unspoiled.

A moody Lake Superior shifts from peaceful sunrises and sunsets to thunderous storms that crash large waves against the rocky shore. In the winter, the lake transforms into an arctic-like landscape of frozen ice sculptures and caves.

People of all abilities can drive, bike, kayak and camp along the coast, explore by motorboat, or hike. The Superior Hiking Trail and Lake Superior State Water Trail draw nature lovers from around the world.

As you start your journey, pay a visit to the Duluth Ship Canal—it’s the gateway to Duluth Harbor from Lake Superior for international ships. Standing out on the pier and witnessing these enormous boats pass through the harbor is fascinating, as is watching the historic lift bridge in action.

My children enjoy walking the lichen-covered pathway to the Grand Marais Lighthouse while watching kayakers and bigger seaworthy vessels.

The shoreline offers endless beaches scattered with agates and driftwood. Beachcombing has always been one of my family’s favorite pastimes. Several state parks, including Tettegouche, Cascade River and Temperance River, offer access to these natural wonders.

Moving inland, you’ll find a multitude of serene lakes, tumbling rivers and endless woodlands. I love to discover hidden waterfalls, and occasionally I encounter loons, moose, black bears and wolves.

Minnesota’s North Shore is a place to find your own path and travel at your own pace. The entire trip is truly the destination.
